Hurricane Drink Recipe

➤ Introduction for Hurricane Drink Recipe

Hey, so I have to tell you about the Hurricane drink mocktail, which I have completely fallen in love with! Like, I’m not even joking – there’s something quite literally awesome (and definitely insane) about the whole idea!

So, I was trying to think of something to create for our family reunion, I was thinking, I want something that looks cool, tastes amazing and also something that everyone can have. Then I found this Hurricane drink recipe and when I tried it for the first time – I was like whoa, it was a game changer. It’s literally like drinking a sunset; all these crazy tropical flavors all at once hitting your taste buds, and that deep red color; when you drink hurricane drink you immediately feel like you are somewhere on a beach instead of in your house in the backyard.

Anyways, originally the whole hurricane drink thing started in the 1940’s at Pat O’Brien’s, a bar in New Orleans, some bartender was just trying to get rid of stuff he had leftover because of the war and magically, he created something amazing. Mine just takes all those tropical flavors and makes it something so everyone can enjoy – without the alcohol.

Every time I make these hurricane drink i love watching everyone react. My cousin does this little happy dance with her first sip, and then everyone is just laughing and hanging out together. That is really the thing – at that point, it is not even about the drink! It is about creating those memories where people actually connect and have a good time!

➤ Why I Love This Hurricane Drink Recipe

OMG this drink is sooo good! The Hurricane drink has everything you want – it’s sweet, it’s sour, it’s fruity and it looks beautiful. It really makes you feel like you’re on vacation, even when you’re sitting on the couch at home.
The color gets me every time. When you layer it all, it becomes this deep red and is absolutely stunning. The combination of passion fruit and citrus? Amazing! It legitimately tastes like I’m in the Caribbean, and the grenadine really doesn’t just make it look pretty but adds pomegrenate sweetness that ties it all together.

➤ Hurricane Drink Recipe Ingredients

This is what we will need:

2 oz passion fruit juice (this is where the magic happens)
2 oz pineapple juice (get the real stuff if you can!)
1 oz fresh orange juice (don’t get the bottle stuff)
1 oz fresh lime juice (we want some zip!)
1/2 oz grenadine (for the nice color and sweet flavor)
1/2 oz simple syrup (taste as you go)
Tons of crushed ice

As far as garnishes:

pineapple wedge
cherry (maraschino or fresh)
orange slice
one of those tiny umbrellas (because why not!)
mint sprig

If I’m feeling extra:

a splash of coconut cream for that creamy tropical flavor
switch out some of the pineapple juice with mango juice
roll the rim in toasted coconut
if you’re feeling very showy, add some edible flowers

➤ How to Make Hurricane Drink Recipe

1 • Step 1: Prepare the glass

Fill the hurricane glass with crushed ice – like, fill it to the brim. No crushed ice? No problem! Toss some ice cubes in the blender and pulse a few times. Believe me, it has to be crushed ice or this drink won’t work!

2 • Step 2: Shake it all up

In a shaker with ice, add the passion fruit juice, pineapple juice, orange juice, lime juice, and simple syrup. Shake vigorously until very cold (15-20 seconds).

3 • Step 3: Pour it (this is cool)

Strain over the crushed ice filling the glass about 3/4 full. Now the fun part – take the grenadine and slowly pour it down the inside of the glass on one side. Watch it sink to the bottom and make those cool red layers – it’s amazing to watch.

5 • Step 5: The last touch

Give it a quick, soft stir right before you serve it – you’ll get these awesome color swirls that look incredible. Just put in a fun straw, and bam – it’s ready.

➤ Hurricane Drink Recipe Tips and Variations

I can tell you. I have been making this hurricane drink for years, and there are a couple of things you need to know to make them taste good.
First, you always want to put your glasses in the freezer prior, to begin with: it makes a huge difference, so the drink will be cold longer.
Also, do this hurricane drink if you want, but take some toasted coconut and rim your glass with it before you add ice – it is a major game changer.
I’m super obsessed with variety. For a Cucumber G&T, simply muddle some cucumber first. It’s crazy refreshing.

➤ Serving Suggestions for Hurricane Drink Recipe

• These drinks like hurricane drink are actually great for all sorts of delicious occasions. Summer BBQs? Insanely perfect – there is something about drinking a tropical beverage when it is super hot outside and I can only imagine how those flavors must be.
• I am always making these drinks for pool parties because they look super good just sitting there next to the water. And for family get togethers? It doesn’t matter if you have kids, grandparents, or a cousin that doesn’t like anything – everyone is going to enjoy these drinks.

• Food wise, holy hell, you can make an endless amount of combinations. You put these drinks together with some grilled seafood and it is like your taste buds went on holiday. Fish tacos, grilled shrimp, coconut rice – the tropical flavors complement each other so well.

• I’ll go crazy for anything Caribbean too, such as jerk chicken or plantains. Tropical fruit salads taste so much better when you’re enjoying one of those. For appetizers, I love coconut shrimp with hurricanes, or those tropical spring rolls, or fresh fruit kabobs – you get the point.

Sooo, if you are loving this Hurricane, you must try my Painkiller recipe next! Both drinks are simply tropical magic that makes you feel like you are relaxing on some beach near an ocean. While the Hurricane is bright and fruity with those beautiful layers, the Painkiller is rich and creamy, awash in coconut luxury. Same vacation vibes, entirely different experience. Seriously, make the Painkiller next – you will not regret it!

➤ Storage and Leftovers

When planning a get together, you can certainly take the time to combine all the fruit juices ahead of time, and place them right in the refrigerator up to 24 hours. What you want to do, is keep the grenadine separate so it doesn’t muddle the layering. One very important note – do NOT freeze the batch mixture over ice, because it will dilute every flavor you worked so hard to create.

Fresh fruit juices are best in 24 hours, but they generally will last about 3 days in the fridge if that is what’s needed. The simple syrup? That is good refrigerated for a whole month, so every time I make it, I just make extras when I am going through the trouble of juicing all those tropical fruits!

Want to freeze some? Go ahead – just wrap that fish up tight – plastic wrap first, then foil. It will last about 2 months before it tastes like freezer.

Notes

  • The trick is getting everything as fresh as possible. This drink lives or dies by those bright tropical flavors, so you can’t mess around with old or fake stuff. I actually keep frozen passion fruit pulp stashed in my freezer just for drinks like this – total game changer.
  • The whole thing takes about 5 minutes and looks like something that would cost you way too much money at a fancy resort. Honestly, it is everything to see peoples’ faces when they see this.

➤ Hurricane Drink Recipe FAQs

Q: Can you use bottled fruit juices?

⤷ A: I mean, you can, but fresh juices honestly make such a huge difference in flavor! Bottled juices often have the awkward artificial taste that destroys the tropical paradise vibe. If you must use bottled, at least make sure to grab the 100% juice stuff with no added sugar!

Q: What if you can’t find passion fruit juice?

⤷ A: Simply sub it out for mango juice or guava juice – it’s basically the same tropical flavor. Some grocery stores even sell frozen passion fruit pulp that you can just mix with a little water and strain. Honestly, those are sooo much better than the majority of bottled ones anyway!

Q: Want to make it less sweet?

⤷ A: No big deal – just reduce the simple syrup and grenadine, then bump up the lime juice to create more tartness. You can also buy unsweetened fruit juices and adjust all the sweetness with your simple syrup.

Q: Why doesn’t your hurricane layering look right?

⤷ A: The trick is to very slowly pour the grenadine down the side of the glass. Since it is heavier than the other juices, it will naturally settle at the bottom of your glass as you pour it. Pour too fast or stir it too much and you’ll ruin the layered look!

Q: Making it frozen?

⤷ A: You sure can! Just mix everything with about 1 cup of ice for that blended tropical slushie vibe on a blazing hot day. Remember to add the grenadine after blending so you have the colored layers.

Q: What glass should I use?

⤷ A: The hurricane glass is clearly a winning option, but highball glasses, and even wine glasses, if you’re fancy, work great too. Just choose a glass with space for all the crushed ice and pretty garnishes!
