Description
Fry Bread is a deliciously simple and versatile dish that warms the heart and soul, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm water or milk
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir well to ensure the baking powder is evenly distributed throughout the flour.
- Gradually add the warm water or milk to the dry mixture. Gently mix until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for a few minutes until smooth.
- Cover your kneaded dough with a clean cloth and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
- In a deep skillet, heat enough oil over medium heat for frying. You can test if it’s ready by dropping in a small piece of dough; it should sizzle immediately.
- Divide the rested dough into small balls, then flatten each ball to about 1/4 inch thick.
- Carefully drop each piece into the hot oil, frying until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Remove the fry bread from the oil and drain on paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
For a fluffier texture, let the dough rest longer—up to an hour. Serve with toppings like honey, jelly, or taco fixings. For gluten-free options, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
